creating Christmas * day 12

The humble mince pie

I don’t know about you but as I get older a mince pie gives me more trouble than I need at Christmas. Call it indigestion, heartburn or whatever I know when I have eaten one these days.

It is a bit miserable that I can’t eat them without suffering anymore as nothing says Christmas quite like a mince pie; I swear they have been in the shops since we returned home from holiday in August. In Sainsbury’s, like most supermarkets, they are piled high but are never as good as a homemade one, at least I don’t think so.

I still make a few but these are mainly to give to people dropping by unexpectedly or take to some event. I like to make those tiny ones that you can eat in a mouthful and they do make a lovely little gift.

Strangely, I can eat a small amount of the wonderful Ecclefechan tarts that we can buy in our local Sainsbury’s now. They are like a cross between a Yorkshire curd tart and a mince pie. At one time we only ever saw these in the shops in Scotland when we went up to our cottage, the little town of Ecclefechan being only a short detour on the way to Stranraer.

So I will stick with these at Christmas time, maybe one day I will try out a recipe for them!

As I missed posting this yesterday, there are two posts today so that I can catch up.

  1. Thankfully I can still eat mince pies. I love them and they are an essential treat. I don’t like any of the supermarket ones, too sweet and the pastry is too mushy with additives I don’t want to eat. Luckily our local farmshop has fabulous mince pies where the pastry only has the ingredients I expect. I don’t try to make them as I’m lousy at making pastry!

  2. I love mince pies but hate fruitcake. Don’t make either these days as no-one seems to eat them. If I want a mince pie fix, I buy a couple from Bird’s Bakery, which is local to us and just about the best around.
Iris had her carol morning a couple of weeks ago, and there were hot drinks and cake. They managed the songs with actions beautifully, but it was funny when one of DIL’s former nanny children, aged 2 and very sweet saw Iris on the stage and rushed down calling her name and trying to climb up to be with her. She was very embarrassed! Xx Gill

  3. I used to make mince pies in industrial quantities to freeze ready for various events plus our own consumption. Now I make a dozen and they last for ages! But I do like the taste of mincemeat.

  4. Ecclefechan tarts sound lovely. I love a Yorkshire curd tard and a minced pie. I haven’t bought any so far this Xmas but intend to make some a few days before Xmas, along with some sausage rolls. Yours look lovely. (Johnnyjumpsup)

  5. You are right about homemade mincepies tasting so much better than shop bought ones. This year I have discovered my husbands talent for making them. |He now has that baking job for life. His pies are much better than mine.
